Wow! Are There Really 40 Tennis Courts at the University of Texas?

Okay, so I stumble across what I believe to be Whitaker Fields (on the Web) at the University of Texas and see that they have 40 tennis courts there.

Is this true?  After doing some research, I don’t believe I found any other facility, except for the one being built in Rome, Ga, which will or does have 60 courts, or the Mobile Tennis Center in Alabama, which has 60 courts.  Any one of these is more than the number of courts in Flushing Meadows at The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

I’m not a big fan of 5 courts side-by-side with no kind of separation such as a 3 foot fence or those crazy nets which I hate playing near.  There are simply way too many errant balls coming from too many directions and I love hitting shallow angled shots.  The worst court injury I have ever seen was on a layout like this.  It was a deep angled shot and the returning player planted her heel on a ball rolling from two courts over, while the players on the adjacent court were battling it out at the net.  It was nasty and I hadn’t heard a scream of pain like this since hearing both of the shins of an opponent break during a soccer match.

Nonetheless, it is great to have so many courts available at one facility.
